She\u2019s one of the culinary vendors at the new American Dream mega mall, a venture that\u2019s helping her prove her concept and grow her own version of the American dream. Here\u2019s her story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Warm childhood memories and smiles shared at family gatherings form the core of A\u2019Jar Sweet Cream Factory, a family-run business. Carolyn keeps these joyful feelings in mind as she layers baked goods, fresh fruit and sweet cream to make her signature desserts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of her most popular flavors, a banana pudding her sister-friend Pat taught her to make, holds extra-special meaning. Not only did her kids love it growing up, a close friend of hers asked for it while she was fighting a terminal illness. When Carolyn, a life-long baker, brought dinner and banana pudding, her friend told her \u201cit\u2019s too good for the whole world not to taste.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"https:\/\/static.wixstatic.com\/media\/719b26_cb9871ad86cf4e9fba357fcb0b1ba353~mv2.jpeg\/v1\/fill\/w_700,h_460,al_c,q_80,usm_0.66_1.00_0.01,enc_auto\/719b26_cb9871ad86cf4e9fba357fcb0b1ba353~mv2.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"230\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" class=\"lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 350px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 350\/230;\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt was very comforting to her,\u201d says Carolyn, who was then chief of staff at a health and wellness company. \u201cI think it brought back things she knew as a child growing up. She said \u2018I love it\u2019 and told me \u2018you need to do something with this\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Encouraged by her friend, Carolyn started to bring desserts to coworkers and ask them for feedback on her flavors. She kept commuting into the city until she encountered a health scare of her own. Her recovery would prove to be a turning point.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cGoing through the process of getting better and working on my health, I decided to let all that other stress go and to pursue what I love,\u201d Carolyn says. \u201cI said \u2018let me just do this. Let me really work on it now\u2019.\u201d In 2018, she left her senior corporate position and funneled 30 years of experience into starting her own business.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"https:\/\/static.wixstatic.com\/media\/719b26_52c87c0038a74a2497b55513a951f92e~mv2.jpeg\/v1\/fill\/w_600,h_452,al_c,q_80,usm_0.66_1.00_0.01,enc_auto\/719b26_52c87c0038a74a2497b55513a951f92e~mv2.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"226\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" class=\"lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 300px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 300\/226;\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today, Carolyn runs A\u2019Jar Sweet Cream Factory with family by her side, a strategic move to keep future generations involved and to build a legacy. Carolyn\u2019s son Alexander Ballard covers the business side as CEO along with daughter in-law Jazlyn Ballard who heads operations. Her daughter Alexis Ballard handles social media and leads baking efforts in the kitchen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Together, they test new recipes and prep for days selling at their cart in the American Dream. Filling enough jars for the mall \u2013 two or three times what they did in the past \u2013 pushed them to quickly figure out how to work efficiently within a faster turnaround time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Banana pudding remains a best seller, along with strawberry shortcake and cookies and cream. \u201cJust try it,\u201d Carolyn says she tells her customers as they approach her cart. \u201cOne taste is all takes, and they are in love with it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A\u2019Jar Sweet Cream Factory will be at American Dream at least until mid-March, and Carolyn hopes to extend. \u201cIt\u2019s been thrilling,\u201d she says noting that her Instagram numbers are up. \u201cWe have definitely made our mark here.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She\u2019s using learnings from this initial retail experience to improve and strategize on expansion. \u201cThis gives me the opportunity to really look at the industry and see where we want to position ourselves,\u201d Carolyn says.
